Happy Birthday, Adam!

OK, look at us and tell me how is it possible that we have a 20-year-old son? I mean, if we're only 30-ish (give or take a decade), how can we have a son who's 20? It's not physically possible. And, yet, there it is.

Here's a pic of Chuck and I at a lovely little bistro last month in New Jersey. Now, honestly, if you didn't know how old this hot, young couple was, what would you guess? 30? 32? OK, 35 tops? (You know, I have super-powers and can hear you laughing all the way out here in the suburbs of Philly. So, you might want to knock it off.)

Twenty years ago at this very moment, I'd just received a gift from heaven - an epidural. Unfortunately, I still had four hours to go before the biggest blessing/pain in my ass would officially arrive on the planet. Adam Mitchell Schubert came barrelling into the world at 2:22PM MST on Monday, May 8th, 1989. All kidding aside, it was one of the two best days of my life (the other day was two years and eight months later when Ethan was born.)

I remember lying in the hospital bed and cradling my newborn in my arms. We stared at each other and had a truly out-of-body experience. It was a connection I'll never forget. As crazy as it seems, I believe we "bonded" at that very magical moment. And right after that, I had this thought: "Oh my God - someday this sweet, little baby will be a TEENAGER!!!! Help, doctor, put it back!!"

And, it's true. That sweet, little baby did become a teenager. Somehow, we both managed to make it through those (frightening) years, and now Adam is heading directly for adulthood. And that, my friends, is nothing short of crazy. Like Jerry said, what a long, strange (fun, amazing, incredible, frustrating, fascinating, mind blowing) trip it's been.

Here's what our tiny baby looks like now. He used to be a geek who wore only sweat pants and t-shirts. Now he's in college and is a super-cool drummer in a punk rock band called Combat Crisis. And, damn, he's kinda cute! At least we know where he gets his good looks (see pic of Chuckie-poo above) and talent from (see pic of moi above).

So, please join me in welcoming my little, baby Adam (or, Amo, as he called himself until he was two. "What's your name?" random stranger would ask. "Amo!" he'd reply. And I thought I'd taught him never to talk to strangers...) into his third decade of life.

Happy 20th, Adam, and many, many more!

All my love, Mom.;-)

Aw, he IS cute! I noticed the Rancid T-shirt, too. Cool! Happy birthday, Adam!

Beth, Yeah, he's a little too cute for his own good, plus he's a drummer in a band. Needless to say, he's rarely without a girlfriend. You should check out their music (I linked it on the post.) It's pretty hard-core punk.

Aww, cuteness! Happy birthday! I love the name Adam. That's my hubby's name, too. :)

Michelle, It is a beautiful name. I'll pass along your good wishes to my "baby"!

Happy Birthday to Adam, and what a special day for you, too. You and Chuck are freakin' ADORABLE!!! And you do look so young--I'm not sure you're old enough to drink.

Love you! XOXO

DebraLSchubert said...

Dena, Thanks for coming by! I think THEY are getting older, and WE are not. That's my philosophy, care to join me?

DebraLSchubert said...

Linda, Thank you for thinking we're adorable, and you're right - I always keep my ID with me when I drink because I'm always getting carded. (NOT!!!!) I'll give Adam your good wishes.

(Chuck and I ate at Cheesecake Factory yesterday and I wished you were there. When are you coming back to Philly???)

Aw, he's adorable. Well done fellow mother! You and Chuck have done a wonderful job. :) My girl will be twelve this year and as she is standing at the gate of adolescence I'm aware how hard it is to raise them to adulthood. Of course, I have to admit some shock because I had no idea you had that child when you were nine! Looking at you in that pic, you don't look much past thirty my dear and I'm not joking! What are they putting in the water in Philly? Youth serum? Take care and wish that lovely child of yours a happy birthday from Canada!

DebraLSchubert said...

Val, Thank you, honey. You are WAY too kind! (And, yes, I was only nine. Wink, wink!!) I'll send Adam your Canadian birthday wishes.;-)

Get outta here! You really do look like you're in your teens!

Hope Adam's birthday is one that he'll always remember. My youngest will be 20 in June. Such a special time for them.

What a cute rockin' son you have!
I hope you get to celebrate with the birthday boy!
I liked how you described the day he was born. I seriously loved, loved, loved those first few months of having a newborn (well, I guess all the years have been fun, but that was a special time).

Sweet...Happy Birthday Adam! And Happy Mother's Day to you Debra! :-)

CCD, Teens? You are way too kind! It is an interesting time - watching them spread their wings can be both exhilarating and terrifying. You want them to be safe, happy and make good choices, but we all make mistakes and have our lessons to learn in life. No matter what, I love my "babies!"

DebraLSchubert said...

Kelly, That truly is what happened the day he was born. Of course, when you've got a newborn (especially your first) you think they're never going to grow up and become teenagers and do all the naughty things we did when we were teenagers... Hah! Guess what? New parents are stupid!!! (Great example of "ignorance is bliss"!!!)

DebraLSchubert said...

Traci, Thanks so much for the good wishes. Much appreciated!;-)

Any Mom who posts her son's happy birthday entry with him wearing a hard core punk(at least the songs I've heard) Rancid t-shirt on is a cool Mom. ~Mary

DebraLSchubert said...

F&M, Yeah, according to Adam, I'm a pretty cool mom. Check out their link. Their band is hard core punk and they really are good!

Debbie said...

I'd say you all look 29, tops. And look how happy and in love. That is the best part.
Happy birthday Adam and to you mom. Man, it goes by fast, doesn't it?

Kasie West said...

Kinda cute???? He's a babe. Happy Birthday, Adam.

By the way, I had the same exact thought when I held my first newborn (the 'oh, no she's going to be a teenager one day' thought. I cried. No really, I did.)

Julie said...

Now how can a couple of 29 year olds have a 20 year old son? LOL

Happy birthday, Adam!!!!

DebraLSchubert said...

Debbie, 29 - yeah, I like that. I'm going to go with that. Being in love is a good thing, especially after being together for so very (very!) long. I'll give Adam your happy wishes! And yes, time goes by fast and keeps getting faster by the minute... (Interesting topic right there.)

DebraLSchubert said...

Kasie, Babe? You're calling my son a babe? OMG!!! I know it's true, but it's kinda freaky knowing full, grown women look at my little baby and think "Hot!"

And, I believe you cried. Babies becoming teenagers can be a very depressing thought!!!!

DebraLSchubert said...

Julie, Exactly! I'll send Adam your birthday wishes.;-)

Thanks for stopping by my blog, and your uber-positive comments. Really. I needed that lil pickup after the previous commenter... but I won't go into all that. :-D I'm glad you found my blog too!

Congrats on your 20-yr old son, glad to hear he made it thru his teenage years in one piece - you didn't slap his mouth to smithereens, eh? I lived thru those teenage years with my son, and good grief, they're ridiculous! But he's 27, and married now, and respectable. He did his ma proud. :) Wait a minute, I remember when I was 27 and it wasn't THAT long ago...

I'll be checking out your blog more later, but I'm likin' it alreada... hubby will be home from some OT at work in just a bit, gotta get some grub ready! :)

DebraLSchubert said...

OzGirl, Thanks for stopping by. My comment to you was kind of also to your previous commenter (if you couldn't tell!). Hope you get a chance to hop back by later. And, Happy Mother's Day!

Happy Belated Birthday Adam! I'm always late for the party wouldn't you know. I can very well guess how many girls the popularity in a band brings out (beside the good looks). Paul my other half is a lead guitarist. I actually think it's amusing.

As for age yeah, 30ish works (winks) and I can say that honestly I have a daughter that is turning 21 next month. (Hugs)Indigo

Midlife Jobhunter said...

He is very cute. I'm sure he'd love to hear that from an old lady! And there is something about a drummer. I married one.

Amazing how quickly it goes by. Some days seem like we'll never get through. And then, poof!

I think you guys look like, 30's. Okay, 33. That was a good age.

Angie Ledbetter said...

How do you get younger as the kidlet ages? Happy Birthday, young gun!

My baby girl turns 20 in July, but her old mom isn't holding up nearly as well. :)

DebraLSchubert said...

Indigo, Thanks for the good wishes. I didn't know your other half is a musician - cool! A 21-year-old daughter? Amazing - the years really do fly by... (And, yeah, 30-ish. I like that.);-)

DebraLSchubert said...

MJ, I was always attracted to drummers. I love rhythm and percussion, in fact, that's why I play rhythm guitar and tambourine! 33? Really? That old? (smiling...)

Julie said...

Happy Mother's Day!!!!!

DebraLSchubert said...

Angie, I love the phenomenon that parents stop aging once their kids reach 20. After all, fair's fair. And, I beg to differ - your daughter's mommy is holding up QUITE well!!!!!;-)

DebraLSchubert said...

Julie, Right back atcha, honey!!

Rebecca Anne said...

Happy Birthday Adam!
And well done Mom, you made it through the teen years and now he's one handsome and interesting 20 year old. A drummer in a band? Ohhh I bet the girls are after him.
Happy Mothers Day to you!!
Rebecca

DebraLSchubert said...

Rebecca, Thanks for your kind wishes to both me and Adam. And a beautiful, Happy Mother's Day to you as well!

Vivi Alden said...

Aw, Happy Birthday to your baby boy! He is a handsome one!!! Good work! And I loved reading this post. My son is only 3 & 1/2, but I'm so excited (and slightly terrified) to see him grow into a young man.

And all kidding aside, you DO NOT look like you could have a 20-year-old child. It's because you're super cool. Being super cool keeps you young.

DebraLSchubert said...

Vivi, Super-cool, huh? Will you be my best friend? 3&1/2 is a sweet age, although they can be a bit ornery (at least mine were - they had the terrible threes rather than the terrible twos!). Watching our babies grow up is a treacherous and sometimes rewarding adventure. It can be hard when you love someone so much it hurts...

Fragrant Liar said...

Your son is adorable. But he needs to do his roots. I have the same problem.

My third daughter was born on May 8, 1981! We have something else in common! Tauruses!

Alas, no epidurals for me.

DebraLSchubert said...

FL, Actually, the blonde is all grown out now so he's back to his natural medium brown. May 8th kids - how cool is that? (Sorry about the lack of epidural, btw. I think I would have tried to strangle myself without it!!!)

That is such a cute post. Happy belated Birthday Adam. Adam is hot and what do you expect so are his parents. You must be proud he has followed you into the music. And I love the name Ethan (my nephew is an Ethan too). My first serious boyfriend was a drummer in a band, oh it takes me back!!
